5 Reasons Twitter is Good for Your Health

Are there some simple things in your life that you just adore? My top three in the food and beverage category are wine, chocolate and coffee.

In the social media category it’s Twitter.

What’s really great is finding articles on the health benefits of wine, chocolate and coffee and then posting them on Twitter.

What about Twitter itself? How could sitting on the largest muscle in your body be a healthy thing?

Wouldn’t it be great if it could be healthy, and therefore we could continue to tweet incessantly and feel good about it?

Here’s 5 of the ways Twitter can be good for your health:

1. Access to the latest health info: If you want to learn about practically any subject, Twitter is the place to find the latest news. There are some really great health experts that post all the latest research, studies and advice. You can easily read about all your favorite health and exercise interests from great people like @fitbet on yoga or @coachprs about training for a triathlon, or healthy skincare advice from @modelsupplies. Here’s my list of health, fitness and sports people along with great companies with great products. I hope you find them helpful; I’m always adding new ones I find.

2. Inspiration: I never thought Twitter would end up being my go-to place for all things inspirational in business, personal growth or personal relationships. People like @iconic88, @LoriMoreno, @2morrowknight,  and @earthxplorer provide us with a constant flow of positive messages to remind us to direct our thoughts in a positive way and become better than we are. You can log into twitter in the crappiest of moods and within minutes be lifted by their words.

3. Friendship: I can’t even begin to name all the friends I’ve made on Twitter, but I will share the list I made of my Follow Friday Favs. Friendships are crucial not only for your emotional health, but also for lowering stress levels with the support and love they provide.

4. Laughter: Laughter is healthy. According to Paul E. McGhee, Ph.D.,

“Your sense of humor is one of the most powerful tools you have to make certain that your daily mood and emotional state support good health.”

There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t laugh really hard on Twitter. People like @blogomomma, @RosevilleRockLn, @ShellyKramer, @BerniePiekarski and @CrabbyMcSlacker have literally brought me to tears. And I can’t forget The Oatmeal and Tremendous News, my two favorite funny accounts. I’ve shared many of their posts with friends who have become fans as well.

5. Giving: Becoming a giver, if you aren’t already one, is easily inspired from the people on Twitter that unselfishly give of their time and resources to help not only charities, but also individuals. I’ve been personally inspired by people such as @Paul_Steele who continues to give without the thought of what he’ll get in return and @askaaronlee, @adamsconsulting,  @RickBakas, @Sung_H_Lee and @unmarketing with their big hearts and busy schedules who will take the time to be helpful and kind. I’m so thankful for people like them on Twitter. They truly show great character and put to rest the notion Twitter is all about what you can make off of it and the people on it.

All things in your life, not just nutrition and exercise, contribute to your health in a positive or negative way.

What’s been your experience with Twitter or other social media sites?  Do you feel that it’s contributed to your health in a positive way or negative way?

Please be so kind to share and let us know what you think!

Lovely post, #hagfriend, and like the handsome and debonaire Mr. Paul Steele, I’m honored to be included. And glad to be able to make you laugh on a regular basis. Twitter makes all of our lives better – on a daily basis – and those of us know truly understand and participate in the medium get that. Hopefully, those who don’t will read your post and dive in with the rest of us :) ))

Wonderful post Joyce! Been following some of the great tweeps you mentioned in the post., now following the rest including you! Truly twitter is the best medium to learn about anything. It won’t be a lie if I say whatever I have learnt in past one year in twitter is far greater than my 21 years of life before. Being a student and teacher of personal growth, I’ve found lots of inspiration and guidance on twitter. Though I have never though that twitter can improve health, but after reading the name of your post when I though of my last one year with twitter, I really found that I was more healthy physically and mentally from the day I joined twitter!

Thanks Sourav! Isn’t it great to know we can improve ourselves with social media! I would have never thought so a year ago either, and I think that’s what makes twitter such a cool place. It’s never short of surprises! Thanks for sharing! :)

I’ve been formulating my own blog post on why I tweet. Very good essay. I found some new people to follow, and reconnected with ones I’ve lost touch with. Twitter has been a real “friend” to me since I’ve left my community in MA & worked toward creating another community in CA. I’ve gotten so much encouragement and support form my Twitter friends; it’s humbling and much appreciated. Thanks for the piece.

Hi Paul and thank you! I’ve heard many people say that they have found support and encouragement during a transition in their life on twitter. I’ve found this to be true for myself also. The fact that you found new people to follow and reconnected with others, is one of the truly great things about twitter. So cool to know it’s been such a positive for you! Thank you so much for commenting!

“Girl you know it’s, yes you know it’s True … *super jumpy pounds in place in black spandex* … you rock Pepπé®s!” Oh you lugnut … you are so sweet. You just made my day. I tell you, our laughs in this crew are top-notch. You bring out the super-sassy pants in me everyday. How lucky we are to tortu … tease … um … “have” each other. ~ It’s so true, how many different and flavors Twitter can bring to the table to emotionally satisfy so many needs in our life. It can definitely change my mood instantly. *setting down whoopie cushion*

I think this one of the best posts I have seen in a while. I am grateful someone forwarded this post to me on Twitter. There are countless health and other benefits of Twitter. It is a pity that there aren’t many people like you who recognize this so well so far. One of the best tool to explore the magic of Twitter is TipTop. You cannot but feel TipTop once you start using it regularly!

Great post Joyce, in this cynical world it is lovely to be able to read such positive thoughts.

I have only been Tweeting for 6 months and have already come across many of the people that you have featured so I understand where you are coming from, I will certainly be paying the rest a visit.

I suppose I now have the perfect excuse to keep sitting in front of this screen and justify to myself that I am improving my health!

    Thanks

    Tony

Thanks for great post. We’ve been actively organizing all of the great health Wisdom being shared by health experts, doctors, advocates and health organizations for the past year. So far we have a list of about 3,000 great health Tweeters. If you’re interested, here’s the list: http://organizedwisdom.com/Health_Experts_A-Z/Contributor_Types/yxc/med

Thanks so much Shyam & Tony- it seems that Twitter is all what you make it. I’ve seen it be a negative place if people participate in hateful behavior. I think if you choose to be part of the postive and lift others up, it’s incredible how that behavior is contagious. Thanks so much for commenting, I really appreciate it!

You know you hit it out of the park when @guykawasaki retweets you – Props friend!
I’m the less aggressive zonkie/zebrass in the middle right?

  • http://www.timbaran.com Tim Baran

What a wonderful post! When I saw the title on Twitter, I wondered if it was a typo, “good for”, instead of “bad for” your health – and I’m a knee jerk optimist :-) Guess it really is all about perspective and recognizing the wonder right at our fingertips.

Couldn’t agree with you more on every point, esp number 5, giving – so key! I also unfollow largely negative folks, regardless of how “important” they are, filling my Twitter experience with the laughter and inspration that you talk about.

  • Joyce Cherrier

Hi Tim, thanks for shaing. You’re right about how we totally control our experience on twitter or other social media sites. We can choose the community of people to be linked with. The follow/unfollow button is there to use freely! Thanks so much for commenting. :)

  • http://www.smedio.com Douglas Idugboe

What better dose of health than laughter, friendship, inspiration, giving and having access to these information in a healthy way besides the life saving info we get access to on Twitter? Joyce, what a way to sum this up.

What I’ve learned from this article is profound – Twitter is not just healthy for the body; also it is for the soul!

    Great article Joyce!

  • Joyce Cherrier

Thank you so much Douglas and what a joy to see you in the comments! Thanks for being one of those incredible people who make twitter awesome!

    Twitter is a Stress Buster…
    thanks..for the Article..

  • http://www.extension.org/families%20food%20fitness Ashley

Hi Joyce! Thanks for the article…I had to share it with my Extension colleagues (health and nutrition professionals in the land grant university system). I oversee an eXtension website “Families Food and Fitness” that is contributed to by these professionals from universities across the country. In an effort to educate and empower young parents to take control of their health and their kids’ health, we are using social media to spread the message of our site. However, getting Extension folks on-board with technologies like Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, etc. is sometimes difficult…Your article echoes my reasons for my love affair with Twitter! Thanks again!

  • Joyce

Hi Ashley! Thanks for stopping by. Thanks for sharing the post and I probably would not have thought there was such a connection a year ago. I have really noticed how much it’s contributed to my own health since the time I started. Good luck with sharing the social media goodness! :)
