When I was just a teenager on Maui one of my favorite places to hang out and skim board was Kapalua Bay. To me it’s one of the most beautiful beaches on Maui. I love any excuse to head over to the west side of the island to visit the place I was first introduced to the sport of windsurfing.
So when Technogym invited me to check out their Kinesis equipment at the Kapalua Spa’s fitness center, I was more than happy to say yes yes yes!
First off the Kapalua Spa is just stunning. The minute you walk into the 45,000 square foot, 3 story facility, you’re surrounded by lush tropical beauty and a professional staff. Mahalo to Cecila Hercik, the spa director, for the warm welcome. They were more than kind in letting me hang out and enjoy their award winning spa.
The spa’s fitness center is a state of the art facility with a large variety of classes, Technogym equipment, and available personal training along with the only Kinesis wall in the state of Hawaii. Personal Trainer Tom Ockerman (AFAA, ACE, NASM) showed me what the Kinesis is all about.
I’ve always preferred doing sports and fun activities for fitness over going to the gym, and I’ve tried to evolve my fitness approach as needed. Even when bodybuilding-type workouts were all the rage, functional fitness always made more sense to me for long term health.
What has made me a fan of the Kinesis is the philosophy of bringing together a complete fitness package of strength, endurance, flexibility, and balance in an all-in-one unit. It’s simplicity. Functional fitness is for everyone because it’s all about natural human movement. You can easily modify your workouts according to your needs and limitations.
After years of windsurfing, surfing, skim boarding, and other sports that have resulted in a slew of injuries, I believe the only reason my body isn’t in a state of brokenness is because of functional fitness training.
The challenge for me has been how best to approach the functional fitness workout. That’s where I fell in love with the Kinesis.
I believe that the reason I’m able to continue to do sports after 30 years, like windsurfing in 35 mile an hour winds and pounding surf, is because of functional fitness.
Your quality of life is dependent on your continuing ability to function physically at a level that allows you to do all the things in your life that are meaningful to you.
We don’t realize that until that ability is taken away.
Are you making functional fitness the cornerstone of your fitness life?
